Vessel Mill – Blackwood

Blackwood is a species of dense, dark-colored hardwood with a near-black to deep brown appearance and fine grain. Vessel uses real blackwood in the inlay band that wraps around the exterior of the Mill grinder, providing a contrast element between the precision aluminum body sections above and below the inlay. The blackwood inlay gives the Mill a warm, natural material presence that no all-aluminum grinder can replicate. The inlay is sealed and treated to be smooth to the touch and resistant to normal contact during handling. It also provides a naturally grippy surface area at the widest point of the grinder where fingers naturally rest during rotation.

Vessel designed the Mill as a 3-piece to prioritize simplicity, slim profile, and ease of use for everyday carry and vaporizer loading. A 4-piece would add a kief screen and collection chamber that increases the height and weight of the grinder, whereas the 3-piece keeps the 22.75mm height profile that makes the Mill one of the thinnest grinders in its quality tier. Users who want kief collection are better served by a 4-piece design from another brand. The 3-piece design keeps all ground herb together in one chamber and is particularly suited for users who load dry herb vaporizers directly from the mill, as the single collection chamber makes portioning easy.

The Vessel Mill competes directly with the PAX Grinder in the premium compact 3-piece grinder category. The PAX uses a squircle shape with threadless magnetic closures on all chambers, while the Vessel Mill uses a standard cylindrical profile with a wood inlay and magnetic lid only on the top. The Vessel Mill is slimmer at 22.75mm height compared to the PAX at 1.77 inches (45mm). The beveled diamond teeth of the Vessel Mill are designed for a finer grind, while the PAX produces a medium grind. Both lack a kief catcher due to their 3-piece construction. Users who prioritize slim profile and natural material aesthetics tend to prefer the Vessel; users who prioritize ergonomic shape and all-chamber magnetic closures tend to prefer the PAX.

The Vessel Mill is available in three wood inlay options: blackwood, beechwood, and walnut. Blackwood provides the darkest, most dramatic appearance with a near-black tone and fine grain. Beechwood is a lighter, pale golden-tan wood with a clean, natural appearance. Walnut sits between the two with a warm medium brown tone and visible grain character. All three versions use the same precision-engineered aluminum body, beveled diamond teeth, magnetic lid, scraper, and 6-month warranty. The choice between them is purely aesthetic — the grinding performance is identical across all three inlay materials.

The Vessel Mill can process 0.5 to 1 gram of dry herb per load. This capacity is suited for personal single sessions or vaporizer loading rather than bulk grinding or sharing large quantities. Users who grind for multiple people or want to batch-grind multiple sessions at once will need to reload more frequently than with a 2.5-inch grinder. The 0.5 to 1 gram capacity is, however, well-matched to the standard individual vaporizer load size, making the Mill a practical pairing for users who load their vaporizer one session at a time.

Open the magnetic lid and use a small brush to clear herb debris from the beveled diamond teeth and the collection chamber. For a deeper clean, separate the three pieces by pulling apart the magnetic top and unscrewing or separating the remaining sections. Soak the aluminum components in isopropyl alcohol for 15 to 20 minutes, then brush clean, rinse with warm water, and dry completely. Avoid soaking the blackwood inlay in alcohol or water for extended periods, as liquid penetration can swell or damage natural wood. Instead, wipe the wood inlay area with a barely-damp cloth and dry immediately. The aluminum sections surrounding the inlay can be cleaned normally.
