What’s inside the box?
Inside the box you get a user manual, warranty card, a warning card, Type-C charging cable, two coils and the device itself.
Overview and Built Features
The Smok IPX 80 boasts an IP67 rating, making it dust-proof, waterproof, and shockproof. It does have that rubberized feel all around it to protect it. Obviously your pod itself is not waterproof. The device is primarily made of zinc alloy with some leatherette on back. On the front of the device, it has a fire button, a nice 0.96-inch display and up/down buttons below it. The device has ‘IPX 80’ written on one side while the back has a pleather finishing that says SMOK. The leather part improves the grip of the device and it feels good in hand.
Coil Specifications
The IPX 80 kit comes with two RPM2 coils. Both are mesh coils. One coil has 0.6-ohm resistance and is rated between 12 to 25 watts. This is a mouth to lung coil. The second coil is a beefy one with 0.16-ohm resistance and is good between 25 to 50 watts but best at 40 watts. This coil works great in direct lung vaping.
Pod Specifications
The pod of IPX 80 holds 5.5ml of e-liquid. They actually changed it out to being a clear pod so you could see your liquid level. This RPM2 pod has a duckbill mouthpiece and magnets for a firm connection with the mod. On the side it has the filling port guarded by a rubber plug which says RMP2. You can fill the pod by pulling the rubber plug and exposing the filling port. The pod of this device is magnetic and it has 4 magnets on the bottom that ensures a strong connection with the mod. The pod only goes in one way in the mod. If you notice, it’s actually got a round area on one side and a flat area on the other side. The mod also has the same areas built in it. You can’t put it the wrong way in the mod.
Installing the Coil Properly
When you are placing the coil in the pod, you need to match the flat areas of the coil with the flat edges in the pod. If these flat parts do not correspond with each other, the coil will not fit in its place. After aligning the flat areas just push the coil down and make sure that the sealing ring is not showing at all. This way you will see the airflow hole but you can’t see the O-ring. If you don’t push it all the way in, you can develop some leaking. Prime the coil before initial use. Priming can be done by pouring few drops of e-liquid inside the coil so that the cotton inside gets saturated.
Filling the Pod of Smok IPX 80
The pod of IPX 80 is a side fill and it’s filling is easy. Just lift the rubber plug from the edge having a small arrow. It has a comparatively big fill port and it holds 5.5ml of e-liquid. They have designed the fill port nicely and a bit bigger so the air can come out when you are filling it. After filling your e-liquid close the rubber plug by pushing it properly otherwise you can get some leaking.
Adjustable Airflow Controls
It does have airflow controls on both the sides to adjust your hit. The airflow controls are just like small wheels on the sides of the device having plus and minus signs for guidance. You can dial it down to restricted or wide open. Actually you can fine tune your airflow with IPX 80 which is a nice feature.
Turning the Device On – Display Info
Press the power button 5 times to turn the device on or off. The screen will display SMOK, version of your firmware and IPX 80 as it turns on. The display shows your battery percentage, wattage, resistance, voltage, puff counter and the time you keep the fire button pressed. Basically, voltage will only show when you are firing the device. The great part about this device is they actually give you the battery meter along with the battery percentage.
Locking the Smok IPX 80 Pod Kit
If you press the fire button three times it will lock the whole device. The device prevents firing and wattage adjustment when locked. To unlock, click the fire button 3 times again. To lock the wattage only, press the up and down buttons at the same time. This is going to lock your wattage only while you can fire the device. To unlock it, press both the buttons again and it will unlock the wattage.
Changing Screen Colors and Clearing Puffs
You can actually change colors of your display by pressing the up and fire button together. IPX 80 provides six color options to choose from. There is red, orange, purple, white, blue and green. In order to clear your puffs, press the down and fire button together and your puffs will come to zero.
Wattage Only Device
IPX 80 is a wattage only device. You don’t have to worry about if it’s on voltage or if you have got bypass or anything like that. Basically this is just a wattage only device. Smok IPX 80 does go from one watt all the way up to 80 watts and it scrolls very fast. Once you get to 80 watts and if you press the up button again, it will actually go ahead and round robin to one watt. You can adjust wattage by pressing up or down buttons.
Smok IPX 80 vs Original RPM
The original RPM was their 40-watt mod and this new IPX 80 is of 80 watts. If you notice they are very similar in shape. The IPX 80 is literally like an upgraded version of the original RPM mod. It is a little bigger and bulkier compared to the original RPM. Mainly the screen is a bit different and also the size is different. Unlike the original version, the IPX 80 boasts an IP67 rating. Another major difference is of the airflow control, the original had no airflow control while the IPX 80 comes with adjustable airflow control mechanism. They also updated the screen of this new version.
Vapor and Flavor Quality – One of the Best MTL Device
Smok IPX 80 vapes fantastic, particularly if you like mouth to lung. The flavors on it are really nice with great vapor production. The airflow control added to this device makes it one of the best for mouth to lung vaping. You can get a really good mouth to lung experience from it especially when you are using the 0.6-ohm coil with cutting the airflow all the way down. The 0.16-ohm resistance coil is rated between 25 to 50 watts. If you keep the wattage at 40 watts, that is recommended as best and airflow is all the way open, it will work as a cloud machine. Smok pod mods are kind of cloud chasing machines. With this coil even closing down the airflow, it really doesn’t close down the airflow. While using the 0.16-ohm resistance coil It is not recommended for you to close it all the way down.
Pros and cons
The first pro is going to be the flavor. You will find amazing flavor on this device. It vapes pretty much the same either way if you are doing direct lung or mouth to lung, you will get the same great flavor. Most users love to have battery percentage on the mod because that way you know when to charge it or wait a little bit. Another good feature is that the wattage does round robin so you don’t have to worry about going to 80 by accident and then coming back down. None of the coils are rated up to 80 watts so you wouldn’t really be going to 80 watts. But just in case you do and you want to come back down, you can round robin and just start lower instead of worrying about going all the way back down.
Another big pro is that you can lock the wattage only or you can lock the entire device depending upon your preference. The airflow control is definitely something new to these RPM pod mods and they have done it nicely. 5.5ml e-liquid capacity and having an e-liquid viewing window is definitely a pro. 3000 mAh, that is a lot for an internal battery. You can change the colors on the display and it is IP67 rated. Having the filling port on the inside might come as a con to some users. You actually have to take out the whole pod in order to fill it. The bottom charge port for a device that stand up is a con for many. It would have been a lot better if they would have changed it to a side so that the device could be charged in standing position.
Battery and Charging
Smok IPX 80 comes with 3000 mAh internal battery. The Type-C charging port is situated on the bottom and it is covered up with a rubber plug for the IP67 protection. It takes approximately 90 – 120 minutes to fully charge the battery. Fully charged battery can last for more than a day depending on your use and wattage settings. This powerful battery is capable of giving you 8 – 9 hours on continuous vaping.
Color Options of IPX 80 Pod Kit
Smok IPX 80 comes in seven different colors including; Blue, Grey, Brown, Red, Black Carbon Fiber, Fluid Black Grey and Fluid 7 Color.
